We all have times when the ground quakes and
life as we know it is suspended. Only fragile threads keep us tethered. How do we create another journey as we come undone? This memoir is such an exploration.

The Skeena River flows through these pages, a place Joan Conway returns to physically and in memory as she grapples with change. Like the river, with its many sidestreams, her story merges with her relationship to her body and her mother. They are her teachers, helping her to understandhow she is woven into life as she seeks her inner truth.

“Conway’s memoir tenderly reveals how an unexpected crisis can invigorate and shed new light on the life stories that have shaped us.”

Place has a significant role in my writing. Whether it be inspired by immersing my fingers in the garden to grow mammoth lilies or wandering along paths by the mighty Skeena river, these containers fuel my imagination. And how could they not? Living in the wilds of northern British Columbia, any pretense of grandeur is dissolved in the land.
